The 5th Annual MIB (Matt, Ian, and Blake) Awards

We’re back!

Welcome to the fifth annual Matt, Ian, and Blake (or MIBAwards! If you need a refresher on why we insist on doing this year after year, ask and you shall receive:

The awards never go to the right person. Why? Because there is no right person. This is important to remember as we approach the Academy Awards. There is no mathematical equation to determine the winners. Voters vote based on their own personal opinion. So why bother predicting the winners? You’re just guessing whose opinion is going to win out. Instead, I’ve teamed up with two other close friends and cinephiles — aspiring actor Ian Goldsmith and former Warner Bros. Studio tour guide Matt Bauerly — to name winners of our own.

You will undoubtedly notice we have a new category this year: Best Female Director. There are a few reasons that we felt this was a necessary addition to the MIB Awards:

  • It’s certainly not because female directors are inferior to their male counterparts. It’s simply not a level playing field. Female directors accounted for just 4% of the 100 top-grossing films of 2018, and it’s not due to a lack of women interested in directing, I can promise you that. Working in a male-dominated field, it is more difficult for female directors to receive awards recognition. We feel it is important to elevate these women and their films and do our part to support their efforts toward achieving gender equality.
  • We already distinguish between male and female performers for the acting categories, so it does not feel like an enormous leap to do the same for the directing category.
  • The inclusion of this new category also encourages us — Matt, Ian, and Blake — to personally seek out female-directed films that we might not otherwise see.

Top 10 Movies of 2018

If I had to guess, you’ve probably already skipped past this part and are now scrolling through the actual list. I can’t say I blame you, because I’d probably do the same thing. I should just be thankful you’re even here! But if you are in fact taking the time to read this part, this is where I offer the usual disclaimer: This is not a definitive list by any means. These may not necessarily be the “best” movies that hit theaters in the last year, but they were certainly the ones that I liked the most.

With that out of the way, here are my Top 10 Movies of 2018.

The 4th Annual MIB (Matt, Ian, and Blake) Awards

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]We’re back!

Just when you were starting to wonder if maybe we had moved on with our lives, the Matt, Ian, and Blake (or MIBAwards have returned for our fourth annual attempt at upstaging the Academy Awards, airing on Sunday.

Need a refresher on why this is even a thing? I’ve got boilerplate for you:

The awards never go to the right person. Why? Because there is no right person. This is important to remember as we approach the Academy Awards. There is no mathematical equation to determine the winners. Voters vote based on their own personal opinion. So why bother predicting the winners? Top 15 Movies of 2017

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]By now you’ve no doubt realized this is a Top 15 Movies of 2017 — GASP! — rather than a traditional Top 10. Well, 2017 was not your typical year, for reasons both positive and negative. But in terms of cinema, it proved to be one of the best in recent memory. I’ve never had at least 20 films worthy of inclusion for an end-of-year Top 10 before. I compromised at 15, because 10 is an arbitrary number and this is my blog, after all. I make the rules here. Ultimately, I love talking about the movies I love, and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to rescue five more films from being relegated to the obscurity of Honorable Mention.

The usual disclaimer: This is not a definitive list by any means. These may not necessarily be the “best” movies that hit theaters in the last year, but they were certainly the ones that I liked the most.

Without further adieu, here are my Top 15 Movies of 2017.

The 3rd Annual MIB (Matt, Ian, and Blake) Awards

The awards never go to the right person. Why? Because there is no right person. This is important to remember as we approach the 89th Academy Awards, airing tomorrow.

We’re back!

Welcome to the third annual Matt, Ian, and Blake (or MIBAwards! Not be confused with the secret organization dedicated to monitoring extraterrestrial activity on Earth.

Ranking the Hosts of Arts Overlook

Arts Overlook first premiered on February 23, 2012, on Cedar Falls Cable TV (CFU Channel 15). Created by Tim Getting, the show was intended to showcase all of the wonderful art from around the Cedar Valley. For the past four years, the iconic computer-generated backdrop of Arts Overlook has shared the screen with a revolving door of hosts, including five full-time hosts and two interim hosts. Meanwhile, Steve Harvey has been the sole host of Family Feud for the last six years.

In the age of Buzzfeed, everything must be ranked from best to worst, from dairy products to each winner of America’s Next Top ModelArts Overlook is not exempt from this cultural obsession, and I am here to deliver the definitive ranking of Arts Overlook hosts. But this blog will serve a dual purpose. In addition to ranking each host in order from worst to not so bad, it will also function as sort of a “Where Are They Now?” piece, updating you on the current whereabouts of each host who has invaded the homes of unsuspecting Cedar Falls denizens via Channel 15 since 2012.

Top 10 TV Shows of 2015

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There are a lot of television shows. But rather than there being hundreds of channels and nothing to watch, there are hundreds of channels with dozens of programming and too much good television to choose from. It’s a good problem to have. More than a few people have dubbed this the “golden age of television.” I tend to agree. In the past, I’ve done a “Top 5 TV Shows,” but with the increasing amount of good television, I’ve had to expand that to a “Top 10.” Even then, I’m forced to leave out shows that I’d like to recognize. But I digress. You’re here to see what shows made the cut. In fact, I don’t even know if you’re reading this or if you have already skimmed through it. I suppose it doesn’t matter.

So without further adieu, here are my Top 10 TV Shows of 2015.

Top 10 Movies of 2015

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]So, I saw a lot of movies last year, as per usual. Some were better than others, as is often the case. As I’ve done the past couple years, I’ve compiled a list here of the ten movies that stood out from the rest. Unfortunately, I don’t have the time or the resources or the inclination to see every single movie that is released in a given year, but I do the best that I can. These may not necessarily be the best movies that hit theaters in the last year, but they were certainly the ones that I liked the most.

So without further adieu, here are my Top 10 Movies of 2015.
